The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, located in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has confirmed the death of a second-year medical student named Ajibola Ibitayo.

With heavy hearts, we share the heartbreaking news that Ibitayo made the tragic choice to take his own life, which is believed to be due to the stress from failing his exams.

In a touching statement released on Thursday, the University’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, shared the deep sadness felt by everyone on campus. Ibitayo, who was studying in the Faculty of Dentistry, was repeating Part Two and had to do so after receiving his latest exam results.

“The whole community at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, is mourning the loss of such a bright young person,” Olanrewaju said. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and everyone affected during this difficult moment.

Ajibola Ibitayo, a student with the matriculation number DEN/2021/023, he saw his exam results, which showed he needed to repeat Part Two for another year. Sources say that he had already finished the same level in the last session and took some serious actions at his parents’ home in Ejigbo, Osun State, after hearing about his exam results.

The report mentioned that Ibitayo’s dad works in the healthcare field. In light of this situation, Professor Simeon Bamire, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, expressed his sadness about the tragic death. In his admonition to parents, he stated that they need to make their ward understand that setbacks are not the end. He said that temporary setbacks in the journey to success are part of life and should not be seen as final. He also urged students to look at failure as a chance to help them strive towards success and greater achievements.

The Vice-Chancellor also offered his condolences, saying that this is a tragic loss for the university community. The university management urged students to support one another using support and seek professional help when the need arises for students who are facing academic difficulties to help them deal with their challenges.

A source revealed that a friend had called Ajibola, claiming that his results were not good. According to the source, this might have contributed to Ajibola decision to take his own life. This comes as a shock; his results were fine, which means his friend gave him the wrong information.
