ARISE News Reporter, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, Killed By Gunmen In Abuja

ARISE News Television Channel Anchor, Reporter and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, fondly known as Sommie has been killed by gunmen in Abuja.

The 29-year-old journalist lost her life in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, during an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.

Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu was born on December 26, 1995.

Hadiza Usman-Ajayi confirmed the killing of Sommie in a statement on behalf of the management of the media outfit.

The statement read: ”With deep sorrow, ARISE News Channel announces the passing of our colleague, Miss Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, fondly known as Sommie.

Known for her professionalism and captivating on-screen presence, she was a rising star in Nigerian journalism whose voice connected deeply with audiences across the country.

Beyond journalism, Sommie was a trained lawyer who brought sharp analytical skills and passion for justice into her reporting.

Colleagues describe her as a dedicated professional, a supportive teammate, and a cherished friend whose warmth left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

In a statement, ARISE News expressed profound sorrow, describing her passing as a devastating loss: “Somtochukwu was not only a cherished member of our ARISE family but also a vibrant voice who inspired, informed, and connected with viewers.

“Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure in our collective memory.”

“We are shocked by what has happened and strongly call for a quick investigation to find and punish those who are responsible,” the statement said.

The untimely passing of Somtochukwu has created a profound sense of sorrow throughout Nigeria’s media landscape, with heartfelt tributes flooding in from peers and audiences who respected her bold storytelling and dedication to honesty.
