The Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has called on political leaders to adopt a non-partisan approach to national matters and focus on the well-being of the underprivileged.

Obi made this statement on Monday in Abuja while discussing the reasons behind the sudden cancellation of his intended trip to Benue and Plateau.

He explained that these visits were part of his ongoing commitment to assist internally displaced persons (IDPs) and to advance health and education initiatives.

The visits, initially scheduled for Sunday and Monday, involved courtesy meetings with the governors of both states, tours of IDP camps, and discussions with various organizations, including nursing schools. Obi stated that he had notified the Plateau Government about his visit.

He noted that the governor of Plateau had warmly welcomed him and provided all necessary assistance, enabling him to spend quality time with the victims at the Bokkos IDP camp.

The former presidential candidate shared his disappointment over his failure to connect with the governor of Benue, despite several attempts. He eventually got in touch with the governor’s aide-de-camp (ADC), who informed him that the governor was busy with an important meeting but promised to return his call before midnight.

Peter Obi stressed that his visit was purely for humanitarian reasons, focusing on crucial issues like healthcare, education, and the welfare of displaced Nigerians. The former governor of Anambra reminded everyone of his long-standing commitment to these causes, recalling that even before entering politics, he had always supported initiatives for the common good. He recalled, “Many may remember that during the Haiti earthquake, I sought permission from then-President Goodluck Jonathan to assist.” Obi further emphasized that his upcoming visit to Benue would involve stops at a school under construction by the Bishop of Gboko, a nursing school, and an IDP camp, highlighting his deep commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable Nigerians.
