Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong: Absence of trophies disheartening

Frenkie de Jong has shared his disappointment about not winning many trophies during his time at FC Barcelona. He has made it clear that he will only stay with the club if he feels he can still make a positive impact on the field. Since joining Barcelona from Ajax in 2019, the 27-year-old midfielder has won just three titles: one La Liga championship, one Copa del Rey, and one Spanish Supercopa. He has also faced tough challenges with ankle injuries over the last two seasons.

De Jong expressed, “Barcelona was and is my dream club. As a child, I wanted to play here. I still enjoy my time at this club, but things don’t always turn out as we hope.” He reflected on the idea that sometimes meeting your heroes can be disappointing, admitting that he didn’t expect to win only one La Liga, one Copa del Rey, and one Supercopa after five years with the team.

At the moment, De Jong is going through a difficult time in his career at Barcelona due to ongoing ankle injuries. He has talked about the “mental struggles” these injuries have caused him, especially as he enters the final year and a half of his contract, which lasts until 2026. Although he turned down offers to leave the club in the past, including one from Manchester United in 2022, he said he might consider leaving if he feels he can’t perform at his best.

He remarked, “People often think I want to stay at Barcelona forever just because I’m happy here. While that’s true to some extent, what matters most to me is how well I can play. If I realize I can’t help the team win, I would have to think about my future.”

De Jong recognizes the urgency of the situation as he has returned from his recent ankle injury as of October but has participated in only two matches since that time. He remained an unused substitute in Barcelona’s last two matches prior to the winter break, which included defeats to Leganés and Atlético Madrid, the latter of which surpassed Barcelona in the league standings.

“I acknowledge the necessity for time, and the coach is aware of this,” he commented regarding his lack of playing time. “If I fail to participate in upcoming matches, it will be due to my own performance. I feel a strong urgency to rectify this situation.”
