A lapse in concentration from goalkeeper Jonas Urbig allowed Benedict Hollerbach to net a late equalizer, resulting in a 1-1 draw for Union Berlin against Bayern Munich on Saturday. Despite the draw, Bayern maintained a nine-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings. Bayern, in pursuit of their record-extending 34th league title, now sits at 62 points. Second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, who have a game in hand, will face VfB Stuttgart on Sunday.

Vincent Kompany’s Bayern started strong, dominating possession in Union’s half, but the home side’s solid defense effectively restricted Bayern to long-range attempts. The best opportunity for Bayern in a goalless first half came in stoppage time when Michael Olise set up Serge Gnabry, but his shot from a narrow angle was saved by goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow. After the break, Bayern continued to press, with Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane missing key chances. It was substitute Leroy Sané who finally found the net in the 75th minute, converting Olise’s cutback to break the stalemate.

Bayern Munich started strong in their game, but their lead quickly slipped away after just eight minutes. Union Berlin, who had mostly focused on defending, made a couple of substitutions to try and score. Their efforts paid off when Josip Juranovic sent a cross into the area. The Bayern goalkeeper, filling in for the injured Manuel Neuer, had a weak moment and couldn’t clear the ball properly. This allowed former Bayern youth player Hollerbach to score with a header.

This result meant that Bayern had gone two league matches without a win, following their surprising home defeat to VfL Bochum the previous week. For Union Berlin, this draw was significant as they hadn’t won against Bayern in their last 12 meetings. The result pushed them up to 13th place in the standings. Unfortunately for Union, their coach Steffen Baumgart wasn’t on the sidelines due to a suspension and had to watch from the stands.
