Following the closure of the polls, it is anticipated that Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals will secure a greater number of the 343 seats in Parliament compared to the Conservatives.
However, it remains uncertain whether the Liberals will achieve a majority of at least 172 seats or if they will need to collaborate with smaller parties to enact new legislation. Canadians cast their votes on Monday to determine whether to grant the Liberal Party a fourth term under Carney or to opt for the Conservatives led by Pierre Poilievre.
The Liberal Party has experienced a steady decline in popularity over the years, culminating in the resignation of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this past March. For several months, it seemed the Conservatives were on the verge of seizing control of the federal government, until the intervention of Mr. Trump.
The American president’s persistent threats to annex Canada, coupled with his extensive tariffs that have adversely affected the Canadian economy, overshadowed the campaign and swayed voter preferences. Key domestic issues such as affordability, immigration, employment, and crime remained pivotal in the electorate’s considerations.
There was a stunning 25% increase over the 2021 elections, 7.3 million Canadians participated in advanced voting in a historic turnout. On Monday, a lively gathering of voters filled a school gymnasium in Milton City, Ontario, ready to assert their democratic rights. While there were differing views on who could best challenge Mr. Trump, all agreed that issues like Canada’s sovereignty, tariffs, and the escalating costs of daily necessities were critical as they cast their ballots.
‘Trump’s actions are affecting not just Canada, but the whole world,’ said a couple supporting the Liberals outside a polling station. ‘The tariffs have thrown the market into disarray, causing prices for everything, including food and essential items, to soar.’ Critics likened Conservative leader Poilievre to Mr. Trump, a comparison that may have dampened his chances on election day. ‘There are certain stances Pierre has taken that we find troubling,’ the couple from Milton City, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed. ‘It might seem minor, but his push to bring back plastic bags and straws really didn’t resonate with us.’ A voter named Peter reflected on the significance of Canadian sovereignty while making his selection. Although he refrained from indicating which party he believed was best equipped to tackle concerns regarding Mr. Trump’s threats to transform Canada into the ’51st state,’ he emphasized the importance of national unity.
Milton’s Milton businessman John Ivsky stressed how important the forthcoming election is especially with relation to tariffs. He advocates for Canada to establish diverse global partnerships, stating, ‘Canada must enhance its economy and foster friendships worldwide.
According to Ivsky, depending just on the United States for military, political, or economic relationships is not enough. ‘We need to cultivate relationships with various nations to safeguard ourselves against shifts in any single country,’ he asserted.
Ivsky also expressed his support for any political party that aligns with family values, conservative principles, and freedom of speech, regardless of whether it is Liberal or Conservative, noting that currently, the Conservatives embody those ideals. Recently, Mr. Trump re-entered the election dialogue, sharing on Truth Social his vision of making Canada the 51st state of the U.S. He urged Canadian voters to support the candidate capable of realizing that vision, without specifying a particular party.

Mr. Trump stated on Truth Social. In reply, Poilievre firmly declared that Canada would never become the 51st state, urging the American president to refrain from meddling in Canadian elections. “President Trump, please honor our electoral process. The future of Canada is solely in the hands of its citizens at the ballot box,” Poilievre emphasized in a social media update.
“Canada will always remain proud, sovereign, and independent; we shall never become the 51st State. Today, Canadians have the chance to vote for transformative change, empowering our nation to stand strong and assert our strength against America.” In his campaign, Carney urged voters to give him a strong mandate to tackle Mr. Trump’s provocations. “President Trump has some rather fixated ideas, and this is one of them,” Carney commented on the annexation threats. “This is no trivial matter; it reveals his deep desire to see this happen, highlighting the gravity of the situation.”
