the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has urged citizens and leaders to renew their commitment to a democracy that delivers justice, freedom, and inclusive governance.

In a powerful statement, Osigwe emphasized that Democracy stands as a powerful reminder of the people’s enduring demand for accountable leadership, credible elections, and a system that truly reflects their will.

“Democracy must never be taken for granted.

“It must be protected, nurtured, and made to work for the people,” he said.

Osigwe stressed that the survival of democracy depends on the rule of law.

He called for independent institutions, transparent governance, and genuine public representation, with accessible justice for all.

Highlighting the critical role of the legal profession, Osigwe said lawyers must defend democratic values, educate citizens, resist unconstitutional actions, and guard against the erosion of rights under the guise of expediency.

He voiced strong concern over rising insecurity, the undermining of democracy in Rivers State, and the abuse of the Cybercrime Act to silence dissent, warning that these developments pose serious threats to Nigeria’s democratic future.

“In such times, the judiciary must rise and take a firm stand for democracy,” he said.

Quoting former U.S. Chief Justice Warren Burger: “A sense of confidence in the courts is essential to maintain the fabric of an ordered liberty.”

Reaffirming the NBA’s unwavering commitment to justice and the rule of law, Osigwe called on all arms of government and citizens alike to work toward a nation where the benefits of democracy are shared by all, not just a privileged few.
