Rob Dieperink, a Dutch football referee known for his contributions to the sport, tragically passed away at just 38 years old. His death comes after he was removed from officiating at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup due to serious allegations involving inappropriate behavior with a minor.

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) expressed their deep sorrow, stating, “We were shocked and saddened to hear about Rob Dieperink’s passing. The football community has lost a respected referee with a lot of international experience, and we’ve lost a cherished colleague.”

While the exact cause of Dieperink’s death has not been announced, it’s important to mention that he was arrested on April 9 in connection with an alleged incident involving a teenage boy. However, the authorities later dropped the charges because they did not find enough evidence.

The police conducted a detailed investigation, which included looking at security camera footage and checking electronic devices. Ultimately, they decided there wasn’t enough proof to move forward with the case.

Throughout this difficult time, Dieperink maintained his innocence, telling the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that he believed he had been “wrongly accused.”

“From the beginning, I have fully cooperated in the police investigation and have always been honest with FIFA, UEFA, and the KNVB,” he said. “I appreciate the support I have received from the KNVB and how they have handled this situation. Unfortunately, FIFA has decided not to include me in the World Cup anymore, and I admit I feel disappointed about that.”

FIFA also released a statement expressing their sadness over the loss of Dieperink.

“On behalf of the entire football community, we send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the Dutch Football Association,” the statement said. “May he rest in peace.”
