Former Chelsea player Oscar has announced his retirement from  professional football after being diagnosed with a heart condition.

The 34-year-old Brazilian midfielder had treatment in a hospital last November following health concerns that arose during medical check-ups with his current club, Sao Paulo. Doctors discovered that he suffers from a condition called vasovagal syncope, which causes fainting due to a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate.

Because of this health issue, Oscar has chosen to end his contract with Sao Paulo, where he had hoped to play for another two years. In a message shared on social media, he expressed, “I wanted to contribute more to Sao Paulo and be part of more matches. I believed I had the talent and experience to play more, but unfortunately, this situation has come up.” He added, “Now I will retire and continue to support Sao Paulo as a fan. I’m finishing my career with this club, which has taken me all over the world.”

Oscar also shared his heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported him, especially the Sao Paulo fans who stood by him during this tough time. He started his professional career with Chelsea 14 years ago in 2012, after moving from Internacional, where he had a successful run, winning the Europa League, Premier League, and League Cup, and scoring 38 goals in 203 games for the team.

In January 2017, he moved to China to play for Shanghai Port, where he won three Chinese Super League titles before returning to Brazil.

In January 2025, he went back to Sao Paulo, the team he has always cheered for, and signed a three-year deal to play at Morumbi Stadium.

In the previous season, he scored three goals and made nine assists, even though it was a tough year for him due to injuries.

Oscar faced several challenges with his muscles and had problems with his hamstring, calf, thigh, and lower back, and he also dealt with some heart-related health issues.
