Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has dissolved the state executive council with immediate effect.

A statement issued on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Nelson Chukwudi, confirmed the dissolution of the cabinet.

He explained that the dissolution was informed by the recent Supreme Court judgment.

Affected by the dissolution are all the Commissioners, Secretary to the State Government, Special advisers, senior special assistants and other categories of political appointees.

Chukwudi said the governor had earlier in the day held a valedictory session with members of the outgoing cabinet to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary at Government House, Port Harcourt.

He said Fubara used the opportunity of the
session, to “thanked members of his cabinet for their services and contributions to the development of the State in the last two years.”

The statement further reads : “Furthermore, the Governor has relieved all Commissioners and other public officers affected by the recent Supreme Court judgement of their appointments with immediate effect,” the statement added.

Fubara also highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s Independence and called on all Nigerians to “work together with Mr President to build a peaceful, secure and prosperous country and a brighter future for all.”

He reiterated his commitment to serve the State “with renewed vigour,” thanked citizens for their support, and wished all a happy Independence anniversary.

The sack ends the period of uncertainty that had affected Fubara’s appointees, whose fate had been pending since the immediate past Administrator of the State, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, who suspended them upon assuming office and dissolving all boards following the declaration of a state of emergency.
