Table of Content

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams, has described the death of Mr Abiodun Aremu, as a great loss to labour movement and the global human rights community.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the renowned activist and Secretary of the Joint Action Front, JAF— the umbrella body for pro-labour civil society organisations, died in Sunday at 65.

He was reportedly knocked down by a hit -and -run vehicle while crossing the road to his residence in Ota, Ogun.

Reacting, Adams described Aremu’s death by a “hit-and-run driver” as suspicious.
He called for thorough investigation to establish the motive behind the “accident”

“We specifically call on the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to urgently look into the death of Aremu and unmask his killers.

“The late Aremu was a brilliant human rights crusader, who stood for whatever he believed in, regardless of pressure.

“Aremu was a renowned student union leader. He was one of the leaders of the Campaign for Democracy, and also the Oodua Youth Movement,” Adams said.

Adams recalled that Aremu was among the human rights leaders who taught him activism.

He also recalled that Aremu was among the activists who fought against the annulment of June 12, 1993 mandate of the late MKO Abiola.

The Yoruba leader added that Aremu was also active in the June 12 struggle between 1993 and 1999 and prayed for the repose of his soul.

He called on the labour movement and human rights community to immortalise the memory of the departed labour leader.

Adams commiserated with his immediate family and the labour movement, praying God to comfort the family, friends and members of the  labour movement
