On Monday, Defence Minister Alhaji Muhammad Badaru initiated the first training phase for 800 special forces personnel, who will conduct high-impact operations with precision, speed, and efficiency. At the launch of the Special Operations Forces for the Armed Forces of Nigeria at Camp Kabala in the Jaji military cantonment, Kaduna State, Badaru underscored that these forces will engage in rapid response missions.
He pointed out that the initiative was part of new strategies to address the ongoing security challenges in the country. Acknowledging the changing landscape of modern security threats, he emphasized the necessity for an elite force that is well-equipped and thoroughly trained in advanced tactics, including unconventional warfare and intelligence-led operations.
Badaru articulated a vision to cultivate a highly skilled, agile, and mission-ready force capable of executing specialized operations in a variety of complex environments. He explained that the training for this special force would significantly enhance operational effectiveness in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, transnational crime, and other asymmetric threats that plague the nation.
Furthermore, he asserted that this elite force would play a vital role in safeguarding Nigeria’s national sovereignty, protecting its citizens, and ensuring peace and stability both within the country and beyond its borders.
This training program has been carefully designed to develop skilled individuals in areas such as advanced combat strategies, counterterrorism efforts, intelligence collection, and hostage rescue operations. The program equips trainees for essential missions in urban settings as well as high-risk areas, ensuring they can swiftly adjust to evolving threats.
Recognizing the collaborative nature of contemporary security issues, the training will promote effective teamwork among members of the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, and other security organizations, he stated.
The defense minister highlighted that special operations require both technical skills and strong mental toughness. He mentioned that the training will thoroughly evaluate and improve the physical and mental strength of the soldiers, while also focusing on leadership in tough circumstances, fostering a sense of responsibility, discipline, and teamwork among the participants.
Also, he stated that by the end of this demanding training program, the Armed Forces will have a unit ready to carry out high-stakes operations with precision, speed, and efficiency.
According to him, these enhanced capabilities will significantly bolster Nigeria’s capacity to neutralize threats and proactively address security challenges.
The newly established special operations unit is set to be deployed to key regions throughout the nation, strengthening our national security framework.
This event marks the inauguration of the first group of 800 personnel out of a total of 2,400 who will undergo training as part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at cultivating a world-class special operations capability within the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Badaru emphasized Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to working alongside allied nations and international defense organizations to implement best practices and enhance cooperation in joint missions. He urged the personnel to demonstrate dedication, resilience, and a strong sense of duty, encouraging them to strive for excellence, exceed their limits, and take pride in being part of this elite force.
He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support and investment in security, which includes providing cutting-edge equipment and prioritizing the well-being of the personnel.
In his remarks, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Christopher Musa highlighted that this training represents a pivotal moment in the Armed Forces’ history and its dedication to bolstering national security through well-trained personnel equipped with the skills necessary to tackle modern challenges.
Musa highlighted that modern warfare demands military forces to be extensively trained, properly equipped, and able to respond swiftly, efficiently, and decisively. He expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, highlighting that this initiative will greatly enhance his goal of developing a professional Armed Forces of Nigeria that prioritizes the needs of the people and is prepared to carry out its constitutional responsibilities in a cooperative environment.
The CDS encouraged the trainees to face the upcoming challenges and responsibilities with a steadfast spirit, emphasizing that while the training would be demanding and intense, it could be mastered with the right commitment and attitude.
In a similar vein, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State remarked that this training exemplifies the nation’s steadfast dedication to enhancing Nigeria’s security framework, addressing emerging threats, and safeguarding the country.
Speaking through his Deputy, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, the governor highlighted that the current security landscape presents evolving threats, ranging from terrorism and insurgency to banditry, cyber threats, and transnational crimes.
“To tackle these issues, we must provide our Armed Forces with top-notch training, innovative strategies, and the resilience necessary to confront these challenges head-on.
“This specialized operations force training marks a significant step in preparing a new generation of elite soldiers who can defend our sovereignty with accuracy, intelligence, and bravery,” he stated.
He also pointed out that Nigeria’s present situation demands adaptability, innovation, and education that not only prepares individuals for conflict but also equips them to make sound decisions under pressure.
“As the host state for this pivotal training, we take immense pride in supporting the military in its honorable mission. We acknowledge the sacrifices made by our brave men and women in uniform and remain dedicated to creating an environment conducive to the success of this training.”
Sani disclosed in his statement saying that our state has consistently supported our Armed Forces and will persist in providing all necessary assistance to ensure the success of this initiative. He encouraged the trainees to maintain focus, uphold discipline, and fully dedicate themselves to the training, honoring its significance.
I encourage all of you to face the upcoming challenges with determination and strength, because you are not just training to become soldiers; you are getting ready to be defenders of freedom and advocates for peace,” Sani stated. He commended the Federal Government, the Ministry of Defence, and the leaders of the Armed Forces of Nigeria for their vision in starting this training program.
