Sporting Lisbon has made a decision to part ways with Joao Pereira as their manager just six weeks after he stepped in to succeed Ruben Amorim, who recently left for Manchester United.

Pereira had previously been in charge of Sporting’s B team and was given the opportunity to lead the first team following Amorim’s departure. Despite the potential for success, the team struggled under his management, securing only three wins out of eight matches. Once the leaders of the Primeira Liga, Sporting now finds themselves in a challenging position, one point behind their rivals, Benfica.

The decision to relieve Pereira of his duties came after a disappointing draw against Gil Vicente, which highlighted the struggles the team has faced. Sporting’s president, Frederico Varandas, acknowledged the difficulties Pereira encountered, particularly due to injuries and tough referee decisions. He expressed regret that circumstances impacted Pereira’s ability to showcase his talents.

Looking forward, Varandas emphasized the need to learn from this experience and is optimistic about the future with the appointment of Rui Borges as the new manager. Borges, who previously led Vitoria de Guimaraes, will kick off his tenure with an important derby match against Benfica on Sunday.
