Jorge Messi, father, agent of Argentine football legend Lionel Messi, dies at 68

Lionel Messi’s father, Jorge, has sadly passed away at the age of 68 after a long illness. He died in a hospital in Rosario, Argentina, during the early hours of Saturday.

Jorge had been a constant support for Lionel since he was just 14 years old, serving as his agent and manager. Earlier this summer, concerns about Jorge’s health surfaced during the World Cup, leading the Messi family to share that he was experiencing health issues, though they didn’t provide specific details.

Married to Celia Cuccittini, Jorge was a father to four children: Lionel, Rodrigo, Matias, and Maria Sol. He played a crucial role in Lionel’s journey from a talented young player at Newell’s Old Boys to one of the biggest stars in the world of football.

When Lionel needed special medical attention for his growth, Jorge worked hard to make sure Messi got the treatment. There were challenges in getting the care in Argentina, so he helped Lionel move to Barcelona when he was just 13. Jorge remained in Spain with Lionel during those challenging early days while the rest of the family stayed in Argentina.

Reflecting on that time in a 2007 interview, Lionel remembered how his father supported him. Jorge asked Lionel if he wanted to chase his dream in Spain or go back home. Lionel chose to continue, and his father stood by his side throughout those tough moments.

This decision turned out to be a major turning point in Lionel’s life, allowing him to succeed at Barcelona and become one of the most celebrated athletes in football history.

Jorge played a crucial role in supporting his son off the field, including discussions with major global brands to help build his career.

He was there to witness Lionel achieve his dream of leading Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup, marking their third win. At 39, Lionel, who now plays for Inter Miami, had also won the prestigious Ballon d’Or award eight times, enjoyed four Champions League titles with Barcelona, and claimed 10 La Liga championships during his 17 seasons with the club.

Jorge was a dedicated fan of Newell’s Old Boys, Lionel’s first team, where he started playing soccer at just seven years old. The family made the move to Spain in February 2001 after Lionel joined Barcelona at the age of 13. While his mother and three siblings returned to their hometown of Rosario shortly after, Jorge remained in Barcelona to support his son’s dreams.

Newell’s Old Boys expressed their appreciation for Jorge, stating, “He was the backbone and guiding light who provided support and love throughout Lionel’s remarkable career, alongside his wife, Celia Cuccittini.” They recognized Jorge’s vital role at each step of Lionel’s journey, from his early playing days to his incredible achievements in football. The club extended their heartfelt condolences to Celia, Lionel, Rodrigo, Matias, Maria Sol, and the entire family during this difficult time.
Barcelona also expressed gratitude to Jorge for his trust in the club during Lionel’s formative years and highlighted the importance of his support. The Argentine Football Association shared their sorrow over Jorge Messi’s passing, expressing their condolences to Lionel, who is both the captain and a symbol of their national team.

They said, “We stand united with the whole family during this tough time and send our warmest and sincerest support.”

This response came after a television host in Argentina mistakenly reported that Jorge Messi had died during Argentina’s first match at this summer’s World Cup.

The presenter later resigned, and the Messi family expressed their “deep discomfort” over the insensitivity and lack of respect shown by some people regarding what is ultimately a private family matter.

Jorge’s passing marks the loss of someone who, while not always in the spotlight, played a crucial role in shaping  development and management of Lionel Messi’s remarkable career.
