The Kaduna State University (KASU) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced an indefinite strike that will start on February 18 due to unresolved welfare issues.
The union made the announcement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Tuesday. The statement was signed by the organisation’s chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, and secretary, Dr. Peter Waziri.
According to the statement, the measure was taken after the union’s National Executive Council gave its permission.
The KASU branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities would like to inform the public that its National Executive Council has granted the branch’s congress’s proposal to go on a complete, comprehensive, and indefinite strike, which will take effect today, February 18, 2025.
The statement stated that Congress “unanimously and vehemently rejected the promises made by the Kaduna State government due to their lack of substance, specific details, and actionable timelines on the payment of the outstanding entitlements to members.”
The union cited one of the remaining welfare concerns as nonpayment of all delayed salary, which comprised 60% in September 2017 and May to September 2022.
Other difficulties, it stated, included non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances from 2016 to the present, payment of promotion arrears, and Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme supervision allowances.
Unresolved issues included Group Life Assurance and other rights for deceased members, non-remittance of pensions from 2009 to 2019, and the implementation of 25% and 35% salary awards.
The union also sees the reinstatement of university autonomy as a murky area.
