The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has been impeached for misconduct and abuse of office.

Obasa first ran for office in 2007 and was re-elected in 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023 to represent Agege State Constituency I. He was first elected Speaker in 2015. It was reported that members of the Assembly immediately elected Mojisola Miranda, the lawmaker representing Apapa I State Constituency, as the new Speaker.

The removal occurred days later. Mr Obasa is believed to have overseen the removal of N43.5 billion for backup vehicles for MPs, among other dubious actions.
Mr Obasa was believed to be in Atlanta at the time of his impeachment.

His tenure as a speaker has been marred by repeated allegations of fraud and political thuggery. In 2020, there was series of investigations that revealed how Mr Obasa siphoned Lagos cash to his own enterprises and bank accounts. He was summoned to appear before the EFCC after the anti-graft agency was swamped with media allegations of Mr Obasa’s poor management. He rejected all allegations, and no charges were brought following his meeting with detectives.
