In Tuesday’s Premier League EPL clash, hosts Brentford earned a 2-2 draw thanks to late goals from Yoane Wissa and Christian Nørgaard after Manchester City surrendered a two-goal advantage.
After six league defeats in November and December, City bounced back with a draw against Everton and wins over Leicester City and West Ham. City’s late collapse on Tuesday brought their short-lived revival to an abrupt halt.
After an incredible comeback, the Bees are now in 10th position with 28 points, 12 points behind leaders Liverpool, who drew 1-1 at second-place Nottingham Forest. The result puts them sixth in the table on 35 points.
Man City winger Savinho nearly scored in the 50th minute after failing to generate any chances in the first half. He surged forward through the left channel and then hammered a shot off the foot of the post.
Erling Haaland should have scored two minutes later, but instead, he headed straight at the goalie.
In the 66th minute, City finally broke through on a Kevin De Bruyne-created goal. Foden expertly met a right-wing cross and headed in a shot at the far post.
The game should have been over when Foden made it 2-0 12 minutes later, reacting quickest to rattle home the rebound after Savinho’s initial shot was saved to silence the home crowd.
Brentford’s Wissa, on the other hand, ensured a nail-biting finale four minutes later when he fired home from close range to halve the gap, and with City’s defenders having made several last-ditch interventions to safeguard their advantage, they should have been mindful of the threat presented by Brentford.
Nørgaard, a Denmark international, scored a glancing header past Stefan Ortega despite the City keeper’s powerful hand.
After his team put on yet another lackluster performance, City boss Pep Guardiola was ecstatic at the final whistle, embracing and scolding his goalie.
“We just looked tired at the end in the last 20 minutes, we looked leggy,” stated Foden. “They put longer balls into the box and we didn’t deal with the physicality in the end. “Performances are far better than they were before, and it has improved than before, We still have steps to take to achieve our Goals but as long as we keep moving forward, that is what we want to accomplish.”
The players from Brentford felt a lot better after getting a point for their bravery. “I don’t know how we did it,” Nørgaard said. “We stayed in the game even though we were down 2-0. We hung in there”
“I’m not sure how I got there, but it was good to see it go in when Wissa grabbed one back because we don’t want to lose by one. I usually listen at meetings even though I’m not a striker. I was lucky to see it go in after I simply attacked the gap.
