Messi will not play in the 2024 FIFPRO World 11 for the first time since 2006. With 17 picks, the Argentinean owns the all-time record. Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe, and Vinicius Jr. took his spot in the front row.
Jude Bellingham led the men’s overall voting, collecting 11,176 votes from his peers.
Virgil van Dijk, a Liverpool defender, was the only player in the men’s team of the year who was not from Real Madrid or City.
Meanwhile, five England players have been named to the Fifpro Women’s World 11 team.
With her seventh selection, Chelsea defender Lucy Bronze has tied Wendie Renard of France for the most appearances in women’s football.
Their other professionals also selected attacker Lauren James, midfielder Keira Walsh, custodian Mary Earps and fellow defender Alex Greenwood as Lionesses.
The BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year 2024, Barbra Banda, of Zambia and Orlando Pride, is the first African player to be named in the team of the year, while Brazilian sensation Marta returns for the first time since 2021.
