Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, the newly appointed Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, has made a bold commitment to prioritize the empowerment of Nigerian businesses by implementing effective trade policies. She delivered this promise during her inauguration ceremony on Monday in the capital city, Abuja, where she passionately outlined her strategic vision for the ministry. Her goal is to enhance the competitiveness of local enterprises and stimulate vibrant economic growth across the country.
In her address, Oduwole emphasized the critical need for trade policies that are specifically tailored to address the unique challenges faced by Nigerian businesses. “Trade policy must work for Nigerian businesses,” she asserted firmly. She underscored the importance of optimizing trade agreements, particularly the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA), to ensure they serve the best interests of local enterprises. Acknowledging the urgent need for a favorable business environment, she stated, “We must focus on investment retention, therefore we need to create a more conducive environment for businesses currently operating in Nigeria.”
Oduwole expressed her confidence in fostering synergy between the ministry and its various agencies, highlighting the necessity of regular meetings to establish clear, measurable targets. She articulated the importance of accountability and transparency in executing trade initiatives, stating, “What gets measured gets done. When we focus on what is measured and work in a systemic manner, we will not be under pressure. We set targets, we set timelines, and we monitor them.” She further noted the expectation set by President Bola Tinubu, who emphasized the urgency for results during her swearing-in ceremony.
The minister assured Nigerians that they could expect tangible outcomes from her team in the near future, reinforcing her commitment to the public. She also acknowledged the significant obstacles faced by Nigerian businesses, including energy supply issues and market accessibility challenges. Oduwole reiterated the Federal Government’s dedication to tackling these hurdles, particularly through strategic partnerships with other ministries.
Reassuring stakeholders of her collaborative spirit, she expressed her eagerness to work alongside relevant organizations to create productive job opportunities and bolster Nigeria’s export capabilities.
In a supportive address, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Amb. Nura Rimi conveyed the ministry’s readiness to assist Oduwole in realizing her ambitious vision for the industry and Nigeria as a whole. He emphasized the necessity of strong leadership and unified support, stating, “We all know what is required in Nigeria, but without strong leadership and strong followership, nothing can be achieved.” Rimi called upon all directors, whom he described as dedicated and industrious, to rally behind the new minister. “The president chose her because he recognizes her as the right person for the job. Therefore, we all must step out of our shells to support her,” he urged.
