The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST) has partnered with LONGi Solar France SARL, a branch of LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd, to secure a deal for the provision of a 2,600 megawatt solar modular system.
Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, revealed on Wednesday that this collaboration marks one of the most significant solar procurement deals ever made in sub-Saharan Africa.
Upon its completion, the solar panels will power Nigeria’s ambitious Green Hydrogen Hub Project, strategically located within the Liberty Oil & Gas Free Trade Zone in Akwa Ibom State. This facility aims to position Nigeria in the global green hydrogen market by harnessing the country’s plentiful solar energy, establishing it as a regional leader in clean energy production.

Nigeria is making big moves with its plan to expand solar energy by 2,600MW, bringing it closer to the Midong Solar Park in China, which is the largest solar facility in the world at 3,500MW.
This bold move puts Nigeria in a leading position in the global solar energy scene, which could greatly improve access to energy, boost industrial growth, and enhance climate care across Africa. Once it’s up and running, this solar hub will enable the large-scale production of green hydrogen, helping to increase exports, support local manufacturing, and encourage eco-friendly transportation, especially in shipping and heavy transport.
The project is expected to create more than 20,000 jobs in various areas like engineering, logistics, research and development, manufacturing, and maintenance throughout Nigeria. The Chinese renewable energy company currently holds the world record for solar panel efficiency, with its silicon-perovskite tandem cells achieving a remarkable certified conversion efficiency of 34.6%, setting a high standard in solar innovation.
Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, the Director General and CEO of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), remarked, “Using LONGi’s high-efficiency solar panels in Nigeria’s hot and humid climate leads to greater energy production per square meter and a faster return on investment.”
“This represents the blend of innovative technology and Africa’s vast potential — it’s a game-changer.” Green Economy, Blue Opportunity Beyond solar power, the Liberty Free Trade Zone’s green hydrogen project will connect with Nigeria’s blue economy, featuring advanced maritime logistics, shifts in offshore oil operations, and the daily production of 500 metric tonnes of Green Medical Oxygen. This initiative is in direct support of the Federal Government’s national oxygen supply policy and greatly improves Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Engineer Idare Ekpo, the Chief Visionary Officer of APPL, expressed, “This initiative signifies the dawn of a new industrial revolution in Nigeria—one fueled by innovation, solar energy, and sustainable resources instead of oil.
