Mrs. Bukola Agbakaizu, a female journalist at Ogun State Television (OGTV) in Abeokuta, tragically collapsed and passed away while getting ready for her afternoon shift at the station.
Her death was confirmed by Mr. Bunmi Adigun, the Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Ogun State, in a statement released in Abeokuta, as reported by Vanguard on Tuesday night.
The statement read: ‘Agbakaizu, a devoted member of Ogun State Television, sadly fell unconscious while preparing for her shift, and despite attempts to revive her, she was declared dead upon reaching the Federal Medical Centre.’
Adigun described her as a dynamic and dedicated journalist. ‘A dynamic journalist and a passionate comrade, Bukola previously served as the Vice Chairman of the OGTV Chapel and was a invaluable member of the Wale Olanrewaju led executive, he said.
‘Her lively spirit and dedication to journalism will be profoundly missed, creating an irreplaceable void in our community.’
Agbakaizu, aged 52, was an ex-officio of the NUJ Council until her death.
She is survived by two children, her aged mother, colleagues, and friends.
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Ogun State Chapter, also expressed shock over her death.
In a statement signed by the chairperson, Mrs. Sekinat Salam, the association said: “Ogun NAWOJ received the news of Mrs. Bukola Agbakaizu with a rude shock. Her death came when her experience and exemplary leadership would be needed by the association.”
Salam described her as a dedicated media professional.
“As a dedicated member of NUJ, Ogun State Council and NAWOJ, Ogun State chapter, the mother of two will be sorely missed by all. Her compassion towards others, dedication, love, and passion for the pen profession will always be remembered and cherished by all,” she stated.
The statement further read: “Though she passed on at the age of 52, her dedication to God and service to humanity will continue to keep her in our memories for a long time to come.”
“We pray that her soul finds peace in the Lord, while the family she left behind will continue to be under the protection of God Almighty. Rest on, the amazon of our profession.”
