Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has admitted that the team faces an uphill battle after losing 3-0 to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in the UEFA Champions League. Following a stunning first-half performance from Federico Valverde, who scored three goals in just 22 minutes, City now faces a difficult task in the second leg at their home ground, the Etihad Stadium, next week.
City briefly felt hopeful in the second half when their goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, saved a penalty kick from Vinícius Júnior, but by then the damage had already been done.
In his remarks after the game, Guardiola was honest about the team’s chances of advancing to the next round. He said, “Right now, not much,” when asked about their prospects. However, he emphasized that they would work hard to improve their performance in the upcoming match.
Before the game, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti suggested Guardiola might surprise everyone with his lineup, and he did just that. Guardiola started players like Jérémy Doku, Savinho, and Abdukodir Khusanov, and even put Nico O’Reilly at left-back, a position he doesn’t usually play. Unfortunately, O’Reilly struggled and was at fault for the first goal, which Valverde scored after capitalizing on a misplayed pass.
Guardiola replaced Savinho at halftime when City was already down 3-0, but he stood by his decisions regarding the lineup. He questioned how often O’Reilly has played as a left-back this season, insisting that he needed to make changes to handle Real Madrid’s attacking threats better. He also pointed out that he had successfully rotated players in previous matches.
Guardiola explained that the plan was for Manchester City’s wingers to stretch the field and open up space in Real Madrid’s defense. This would enable players in the middle to take advantage of the gaps near the penalty area, allowing the forwards to sprint behind the defense.
Even though they suffered a hard loss, City is eager to deliver an outstanding performance when the two teams again in Manchester next week.
