In 2024, the Borno State Police Command stated Tuesday that it had found 18 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in different parts of Borno State and detained 721 people for offenses including armed robbery, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and kidnapping.
Yusufu Lawal, the State’s Commissioner of Police, said this at the Command’s end-of-the-year press conference in Maiduguri the state capital.

In order to keep Maiduguri and other towns safe and secure, the CP stated that the successes were consistent with the Inspector-General of Police’s goal of a 30% decrease in crime by 2025. The command would continue to implement strong and proactive police strategies.
In particular, he praised the state government for its ongoing assistance to the Police Command in renovating the police stations and barracks in Pulka, Gwoza, Monguno, Lugumani, Banki, and Benisheikh.”This assistance will dramatically boost officer morale and enhance service delivery. The command had significant success in combating crime during the year under review, arresting 721 suspects for offenses such as armed robbery, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), kidnapping, theft, and other horrific crimes.
“The command also recovered 18 unexploded explosive devices and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), 13 stolen vehicles and tricycles, six firearms, a large cache of drugs, and other illicit substances,” according to the CP.

The CP further commended Babagana Zulum, the governor of the state, for expediting the state’s prosecution procedures through his approval of the Borno State Penal Code Law 2023, the domestication of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP).
Reintegrating displaced populations and fostering resilience among returnees in their ancestral homes are the main objectives of the state government’s 10-year strategic plan, which CP Lawal promised would be in line with the command’s 2025 priorities.

“We’re still dedicated to accomplishing these goals with targeted, community-based policing efforts,” he stated.
