The Police Command in Akwa Ibom has discovered explosive materials at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre, according to a spokesperson.
DSP Timfom John, the Police Public Relations Officer, announced this in a statement from Uyo, explaining that this finding has helped avoid a possible disaster at the facility.
The discovery was made after correctional officials alerted the police about some suspicious items found near the centre. After receiving this information, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, ordered the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit and other tactical teams to secure the area.
A thorough search was carried out, resulting in the recovery of two high-explosive rounds and a length of burning fuse, among other tools such as pincers, a flat screwdriver, iron chisels, and a conduit pipe.
The EOD team safely handled the explosive devices, ensuring no immediate danger remained and preventing potential harm to people and property.
The command has increased security measures around the correctional facility, including better surveillance, controlled access, and regular patrols to reduce the risk of any future threats.
“Discreet investigation and technical analysis have commenced to determine the origin of the explosives, and to apprehend those connected to the dangerous act,” sh said.
The police image maker reassured residents that the situation was fully under control and that no casualties were recorded.
She urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement around their neighbourhood to the nearest police station.
The PPRO warned criminal elements that the command would not tolerate any attempt to undermine public safety or target on critical institutions.
She reassured residents of Akwa Ibom that the command remained resolute, proactive, and ready to protect lives and property across the state.
