A gun duel at the Warewa area on the Lagos-Ibadan motorway on Thursday resulted in the neutralisation of four suspected kidnappers, according to the Ogun Police Command.
This was said in a statement released in Abeokuta on Saturday by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola.
A white Paragon commercial truck with the license plate BDG 753 YH, driven by a man named Morufu Adedeji, was attacked by armed men at about 8:30 p.m. on a lonely section of the road.
The driver bravely unlocked the back door during the attack, allowing some passengers to escape. However, the kidnappers became infuriated and beat the driver, leaving him unconscious.
According to Odutola, the attack was thwarted by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit responding quickly and effectively coordinated to a distress call.
She claimed that when they arrived, the cops engaged the suspects in a gunfight.
” Four of the armed men were neutralised, and others escaped into the bush with bullet wounds.
” Items recovered at the scene included one locally made pistol with two cartridges, two daggers, N20,000 cash, one Tecno Android phone, one solar power bank, and three USB lights (suspected to be stolen property),” she said.
Odutola explained that the bodies of the neutralised suspect had been deposited at the State Hospital Morgue, Ijaiye, Abeokuta, for autopsy and further investigation.
She said that Lanre Ogunlowo, the Commissioner of Police had reaffirmed the command’s resolve to bolster security and rid the area of criminal activities.
The command’s spokeswoman also stated that the commissioner had dispatched tactical operatives to maintain surveillance at important flashpoints along the Warewa/Arepo axis, as well as routine patrols to protect the safety of residents and commuters.
Odutola advised the public particularly medical practitioners, to report any persons seeking care for gunshot wounds.
She also asked citizens to be watchful and report suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
