An overnight attack involving Russian missiles and drones on Ukraine led to the heartbreaking loss of 15 lives and left 156 people injured, as reported by local officials on Tuesday. The main strike destroyed a nine-story apartment building in Kyiv, marking the deadliest assault on the Ukrainian capital this year.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed on X that Russia launched over 440 drones and 32 missiles, describing the Kyiv offensive as “one of the most horrific attacks” and denouncing it as “pure terrorism.” According to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, at least 14 people lost their lives as explosions echoed throughout Kyiv for nearly nine hours, leading to the devastation of many apartments.

Sadly, a U.S. citizen died from injuries caused by shrapnel during the attack, as mentioned by Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko during a press conference.

The Interior Ministry of Ukraine reported that 139 people were injured in Kyiv. Mayor Vitalii Klitschko announced that Wednesday would be designated as an official day of mourning.
The attack occurred after two rounds of direct peace talks that failed to make any headway in resolving the ongoing war, which has now entered its fourth year.

Russia has persistently targeted civilian areas in Ukraine with missiles and drones, resulting in the deaths of over 12,000 Ukrainian civilians, according to United Nations reports. Russia asserts that its strikes are directed solely at military targets.

In recent months, Russia has intensified its aerial bombardments. On June 10, it launched nearly 500 drones at Ukraine, marking the largest overnight drone assault of the conflict. Furthermore, on April 24, Russia attacked Kyiv, claiming at least 12 lives in its most lethal strike on the capital in eight months.

The intensified long-range attacks have coincided with a Russian summer offensive that targets the eastern and northeastern regions of the roughly 620-mile front line, where Ukraine is short-handed and needs more military support from its allies in the West.

The uncertainty surrounding U.S. policy on the conflict has raised concerns about the extent of support that Kyiv can depend on. Zelenskyy was set to meet President Trump in Canada on Tuesday to push for increased aid; however, Mr. Trump shortened his trip and returned to Washington, as indicated by the White House, due to rising tensions in the Mideast.

On Tuesday, Ukraine urged its citizens to evacuate from Israel and Iran swiftly in response to the escalating conflict between the two countries, according to a French news agency.

Ukraine’s foreign ministry has “strongly advised Ukrainian citizens to leave Israel and Iran immediately until things get better, due to the serious drop in safety in the Middle East.” As tensions rise in the Middle East and with U.S. trade tariffs, Zelenskyy is diligently striving to keep Ukraine at the forefront of international diplomacy.

Earlier this month, Trump stated that he might let Ukraine and Russia “fight it out for a bit” before stepping in to promote peace, despite European leaders urging him to pressure Putin into agreeing to a ceasefire and starting peace talks.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha pointed out that Russia’s attacks during the G7 summit illustrated Putin’s “complete disregard” for the U.S. and other countries. “Russia not only ignores a ceasefire or a summit of leaders to seek solutions and end the war. It cynically assaults Ukraine’s capital while pretending to seek diplomatic resolutions,” Sybiha stated on social media. Ukrainian forces have responded to Russia with their own domestically produced long-range drones.

The Russian military reported that it had shot down 203 Ukrainian drones across 10 Russian regions from Monday night to Tuesday morning.

The Russian civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, has declared a temporary suspension of flights to and from all four airports in Moscow, as well as those in Kaluga, Tambov, and Nizhny Novgorod, as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, overnight drone strikes from Russia targeted the southern Ukrainian port city of Odesa, resulting in one fatality and injuring 17 others, according to Oleh Kiper, the head of the regional administration.

Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to escalate the conflict simply because he has the means to do so. He desires the war to persist. It is concerning when the influential leaders of this world choose to ignore such actions, commented Zelenskyy on X.

The Russian attack has led to “direct hits on residential buildings,” according to the Kyiv City Military Administration. “Rockets hit from the upper floors down to the basement,” it added. One residential block experienced the destruction of thirty apartments after being struck by a ballistic missile, as reported by Klymenko. We have identified 27 locations where the enemy has attacked. Currently, over 2,000 personnel, including rescuers, police, municipal services, and medical staff, are involved in response efforts,” he told reporters at the site of one of the attacks.

Olena Lapyshniak, 49, was suddenly awakened by the strike that nearly destroyed her apartment building. She recounted hearing a whistling sound followed by two explosions that shattered her windows and doors.

“It’s dreadful, it’s terrifying; in an instant, life as we know it is gone,” she expressed. “There is no military infrastructure here, nothing at all. It is horrifying to witness people perish in the night.” Injuries were reported in the Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts of the city. Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said that fires erupted in two other city districts due to debris from drones intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses.

Following an operation by Ukraine’s Security Service that targeted jets at air facilities located deep into Russian territory, Moscow has stepped up its attacks.
