Senate Passes Vote of Confidence on Akpabio, Says IPU Can’t Dictate to Them

Table of Content

The Senate has broken its silence concerning the growing controversy regarding Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recent remark at the Women Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union event in New York City. In her speech, the Senator from Kogi Central claimed that her suspension was directly linked to her sexual harassment complaint against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

In response to these serious allegations, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele took the opportunity to clarify the matter, citing Orders 41 and 51. He categorically stated that the assertion connecting Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension to her petition is a calculated falsehood.

He emphasized how crucial it is to maintain procedural integrity, explaining that the Senate has to follow strict legal rules and that her suspension was solely due to her blatant disregard for established parliamentary rule. Bamidele underscored that the measures taken against Akpoti-Uduaghan were neither arbitrary nor politically driven, but rather an essential enforcement of the regulations that uphold order and accountability within the legislative assembly.
