On Tuesday, Mr. Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, delivered a cheque for N18 million to the Enugu State Government to support the victims of a devastating tanker explosion.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that this tragic event led to several deaths and caused damage to eight vehicles when a fuel tanker exploded on January 25 in the Ugwu-Onyeama area of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
During the cheque presentation, Mr. Abbas described the incident as a profound tragedy that impacted not only Enugu State but the entire country. He was represented by Mr. Nnolim Nnaji from Nkanu East/West, who led the Enugu State Caucus in the House.
Mr. Nnaji highlighted that this support reflects the House of Representatives’ commitment to assisting both the governments and citizens of Nigeria during difficult times. He was accompanied by other members of the Enugu State Caucus, including Messrs. Martins Oke, Dennis Agbo, Mark Obetta, Anayo Onwuegbu, and Chimaobi Atu.
Abbas praised Mbah for his excellent leadership in the state and his quick actions to support the families affected by the tragedy and help the injured. He expressed condolences on behalf of the Speaker of the House of Representatives regarding the tanker accident in Ugwu Onyeama.
Abbas recognized Mbah’s efforts to assist those impacted and presented a cheque for N18 million to help the state deal with the aftermath of the incident. He reiterated their heartfelt sympathies and assured ongoing support. In response, Gov. Peter Mbah expressed his gratitude to the Speaker and the Enugu State Caucus for their concern, promising that the funds would be used as intended. He remembered how the Speaker reached out to offer prayers after the Ugwu-Onyeama tragedy, which claimed many lives.
Today, he demonstrated that he’s not just supporting us with prayers, but also materially. He has come to share in our grief. “This N18 million cheque will significantly help those impacted and their families. “You can count on us as a government to deliver this aid to them in a fair, transparent, and responsible way,” Mbah said.
