As Zulum commiserates with military
A Nigerian military base was reportedly attacked by Islamic State fighters in Borno state, resulting in casualties and massive material damage.
According to military reports, Islamic State members stormed the Nigerian Army base in Kareto, Mobbar Local Government Area, Borno state, on Saturday using a variety of weapons.
Although the number of casualties was not officially confirmed at the time this article was filed, sources said that at least 20 soldiers had been killed. According to the sources, who asked that their names not be used, there were intense clashes between the army and the fighters, including a car bomb suicide.
According to their explanation, the attack caused a military vehicle to be destroyed and allowed several soldiers to flee.
The fighters allegedly took over the camp and set fire to it, destroying 14 cars in the process.
The sources added that the fighters seized four four-wheel drive vehicles and a quantity of weapons, including heavy machine guns, before withdrawing to their positions.
In the meantime, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has expressed sympathy to the military for the troops’ deaths in Kareto.
Governor Zulum said in a statement signed by Usman Tar, the Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, that the attack serves as a reminder of the state’s indifference to the deadly Boko Haram terrorists.

“Following the attack on Kareto town in Mobbar LGA of Borno State on November 16, 2024, Borno State Governor, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum, has strongly condemned the barbaric act and reaffirmed the allegiance, commitment, and support of the people and government of Borno State.
Gov Zulum also expressed his sympathies to the armed forces and relatives of the victims, saying, “On behalf of the administration and good people of Borno, I offer our profound condolences to the armed forces and families of the deceased on the death of our fellow compatriots.
‘May Allah rest their souls and grant fortitude to the affected families.”
Gov Zulum stated that the Kareto attack is a heartbreaking reminder of the callousness of the Boko Haram rebels, who are determined to reverse the successes made in mass resettlement of internally displaced persons back to their ancestral homes in northern Borno.
Kareto, a bustling town, is one of around 20 communities being considered for IDP relocation from Maiduguri and other regions.
According to Governor Zulum, the attack on Kareto won’t stop the administration from working with federal authorities to fulfill its constitutional obligation to provide the people with the benefits of democracy.
Gov. Zulum expressed gratitude to the military and security forces for putting themselves in danger to protect our land and way of life.
“We are eternally grateful to our gallant military and security forces for all they have been doing to safeguard lives and property in our state. Kareto attack was a painful reminder of the heinous desperation of the adversary to torpedo our modest achievement and cause panic in our communities.
“I call on our good people to stand firm, not to waver, and to support the armed forces as they work daily to confront our collective threats” commented Governor Zulum.”
He emphasized the Borno State Government’s determination to continue working closely with the armed forces to secure our country and bring development.
“Be rest assured that the Borno State Government, under my watch, will continue to work closely with the armed forces to execute our development and Peacebuilding programmes,” he said.
