Thomas Müller to leave Bayern Munich at end of season

Table of Content

Thomas Müller is set to depart from Bayern Munich at the end of the season, marking the end of a remarkable 25-year tenure with the club, as he has not received a new contract offer.

In a heartfelt social media post, the 35-year-old, who began his journey as a youth player and secured an unprecedented 12 league titles—more than any other player in Bundesliga history—expressed his desire to continue with the team.

Müller shared, “It’s clear that today is a big day for me. This summer, I will be wrapping up my 25-year career with FC Bayern Munich. It has been an amazing journey, packed with incredible moments, great people, and unforgettable wins.”

“I am filled with gratitude and happiness for having had the opportunity to build my career with the club I cherish. The special bond I share with the club and our amazing fans will always hold a special place in my heart. As I prepare to say goodbye, my wish is clear: to celebrate titles together and create lasting memories.

“In the weeks ahead, we will give everything we have to reclaim the league title for Munich and achieve our dream of a ‘Finale Dahoam.’ Let’s make it happen together!” He did not mention any plans for his future career.

Müller, who has been a consistent starter for Bayern over the years, has seen a big drop in his performance for the club over the last two seasons and now has a smaller role with coach Vincent Kompany in charge. For months, people have been wondering what his future holds, but neither he nor the club has said much about it. While it doesn’t seem like Müller is thinking about retiring anytime soon, Bayern has indicated that they would like him to have a position within the club after he stops playing.

Bayern Munich has revealed that the choice for Thomas Müller to end his career with the team was a joint decision made with the player himself. He is expected to play his last matches at the Club World Cup taking place in the United States this June and July.

“Thomas Müller embodies the ideal Bavarian career,” stated club president Herbert Hainer in a press release. “No one has claimed more German championships, and his impressive tally of 33 titles speaks for itself. He stands among the most remarkable figures in FC Bayern’s history.” Sporting director Christoph Freund expressed gratitude for Müller’s contributions to the club, saying, “Thomas Müller: no gimmicks, no theatrics, just an incredible instinct and an exceptional understanding of the game—he is the essence of a footballer. There will never be another like him, and he has truly embraced the spirit of FC Bayern from a young age.”

“This decision was incredibly difficult, as everyone can appreciate. Ultimately, it was made for squad planning reasons, and the most important aspect is that we can look each other in the eye afterward. That is certainly the case here. Now, we will do everything possible to secure more trophies.” As a one-club player, a rarity in modern football, Müller has also secured two Champions League titles, two Club World Cups, and six German Cups with Bayern, among other accolades.

He played a pivotal role in Germany’s triumph at the 2014 World Cup. This season, Müller has the opportunity to add to his impressive collection of titles, with Bayern currently leading the league by a nine-point margin. They are also set to face Italy’s Inter Milan in the Champions League quarterfinals next week, with the final scheduled to take place at Munich’s Allianz Arena. “Our complete focus is now on achieving our sporting objectives for the season,” Müller remarked. “It would be a dream for me to bring the league trophy back home and reach the long-awaited final in our stadium at the end of May.” Müller concluded his international career after Germany’s exit from Euro 2024, finishing with 131 caps and 45 goals.
