Tottenham Hotspur has appointed Thomas Frank as their new head coach, successfully luring him away from his previous role at Brentford.
Reports indicated that Spurs were optimistic about naming Frank, 51, as the successor to Ange Postecoglou, after also considering Fulham’s Marco Silva and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola.
Postecoglou was dismissed just 16 days after leading Spurs to victory in the Europa League, marking the end of a 17-year wait for a trophy with a 1-0 win against Manchester United in Bilbao.
“In Thomas, we are bringing on board one of the most forward-thinking and innovative head coaches in the sport,” stated a club announcement. “He has a solid history of player and squad development, and we eagerly anticipate his leadership as we look forward to the upcoming season.”
Despite Postecoglou’s success in the Europa League, it was marred by a dismal Premier League season, where Tottenham finished 17th with 22 losses, their worst performance since being relegated in 1977.
Frank has recently moved to a new role in London after spending seven years at Brentford. During his time there, he helped the team achieve promotion to the Premier League in 2021 by winning an important playoff match against Swansea City. Under his leadership, Brentford became known as a strong team in the Premier League, renowned for its energetic and forward-thinking style of play.
During their four seasons in the Premier League under Frank, Brentford achieved finishes of 13th, 9th, 16th, and 10th. Last season, only four teams surpassed their total of 66 goals.
Frank is very good at understanding player statistics. He works with a dedicated team that helps him find talented players who are not very well-known. They buy these players and later sell them for a lot of money. Some of the forwards they found are Ollie Watkins, Ivan Toney, and Saïd Benrahma. They also discovered a great goalkeeper named David Raya.
Despite losing some players, Brentford has managed to stay competitive in the Premier League under Frank’s leadership, and last season, they were in the running for European qualification.
Forwards Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa scored a total of 39 goals in the Premier League last season, making them likely targets for Spurs in the summer transfer window.
Frank is known for his careful attention to detail, and it’s no surprise that his Brentford team scored within 40 seconds in three straight league matches last season. “We have a kickoff strategy that we tweak for each match. Our mindset and philosophy focus on starting strong and keeping a positive attitude,” Frank said at that time.
Now, he faces a whole new challenge at Tottenham, where getting off to a quick and effective start will be key to winning over fans who thought Postecoglou deserved another season after winning a trophy.
Joining Frank at Spurs are Brentford’s assistant first-team coach Justin Cochrane, head of athletic performance Chris Haslam, and first-team analyst Joe Newton, along with Andreas Georgson from Manchester United.
