Acuna’s domestic club have promised to help his family

A day after traveling to Ecuador for preseason training, URUGUAY international football player was discovered dead in his hotel room.
Following claims of physical and psychological abuse by his former partner, Mathias Acuna was the subject of an investigation.

Yesterday, the 32-year-old was found dead on Monday in a hotel room that his club had made available for preseason in central Andean

Acuna was a striker for Mushuc Runa, an Ecuadorian team in the top division of Serie A.

Although it hasn’t been verified, neighborhood gossip suggests that Acuna committed suicide.

When the hotel employees discovered him unconscious in his hotel suite, they reportedly phoned the police.

Police are now investigating, but are not looking for anyone else involved in the footballer’s death.
Uruguay’s Football Association said, “We mourn the passing of Uruguayan footballer Mathias Acuna with deep sadness.”
“Our condolences to his family, teammates, and friends. Let him rest in peace.”
“Mushuc Runa regrets the death of Mathias Acuna,” the club wrote on Instagram, accompanied by a photo of the player and a black ribbon.

“We extend our condolences to his family and loved ones at this irreparable loss.”
Meanwhile, Mushuc Runa’s president, Luis Alfonso Chango, has expressed his condolences and provided clarification regarding the tragedy.
Chango responded: “We are very sad for Mathias and all this situation. “We knew he had family troubles in Uruguay, but there was no legal reason he couldn’t travel to Ecuador.
“As an institution, we will support the repatriation of Mathias’ body.”
“We are awaiting the results of the corresponding investigation, but we suspect his death as suicide.

Acuna was required to wear an ankle tag as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into allegations of abuse made by his ex-girlfriend.
However, the electronic monitoring gadget did not prevent him from traveling to Ecuador for employment.
Mathias made news in Uruguay last month after it was revealed that his ex-partner, Lu Rodriguez, had reported him for domestic abuse.
Acuna adamantly disputed these charges.
At the time, Acuna explained “The judge informed me that they do it as a precautionary measure, not because you are guilty.

“That is how the laws work in this country. The tag was placed on you for past actions and control, not for being guilty. “Having the tag gives me peace of mind, as there will be no inventions about me going near anyone I’m not supposed to.”All of this also assisted me in ending this toxic relationship that had lasted years. The other person refused to understand that I no longer wanted to be with her and told lies.

“I feel sorry for her because there are women who are suffering from gender-based violence.”I am at ease, surrounded by my family, who know me and who I am. I have never been violent towards anyone.”
Rodriguez defended her decision to go to the police by saying, “I avoided this moment for many years, out of fear, out of respect for his children, out of love, because he turned a deaf ear to claims of responsibility, despite all the damage that many people know I went through.”

All of this turned into physical violence. I put up with that for years. He got to the point where he wasn’t ashamed to attack me in front of his family; he knows it, his family knows it, and everyone knows it, but money is the main motivator.”
Acuna worked as a musician and deliveryman before playing 309 matches as a footballer.

He joined his current club in July of last year, and his goals helped Mushuc Runa qualify for the Copa Sudamericana in 2025.
Acuna also played in Uruguay’s first division with El Tanque Sisley and Centro Atletico Fenix, and he spent two seasons in Greece, one with Super League club Lamia in 2023/2024.
