The Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, who also serves as the Ambassador of the Vatican State, Most Rev. Michael Francis Crotty, praised Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State for embodying values and faith that positively impact society. Archbishop Crotty made these remarks during a courtesy visit to the governor’s office in Enugu on Tuesday.
As he was in Enugu to celebrate the centenary of the Bigard Memorial Seminary, he expressed his admiration for the significant role the institution has played in training young priests. He noted that Bigard Seminary has produced thousands of archbishops, bishops, and priests who uphold and spread Catholic values not only in Nigeria but worldwide. “This accomplishment signifies the essential role Nigeria plays in the universal Church,” he added, highlighting that many of these clergy are from Enugu and serve both locally and globally.
Conveying the Pope’s gratitude to the governor for his support of the Church, Archbishop Crotty, who hails from Ireland, reflected on the historical bond shared by the Nigerian people, which is deeply rooted in faith.
In response, Governor Mbah commended the value system of the Catholic Church, noting that these remarkable values have shaped his work ethic and decision-making for the betterment of society. “Our vision is built on the principles of the Catholic Church, which have set our state apart,” he stated. “Catholicism has instilled in me strong values that have guided my life.”
He further remarked on the Church’s vital role in nurturing young people, which has contributed to the state’s reputation for high moral standards and respect for societal values. The governor also took Archbishop Crotty and his entourage on a tour of some of Enugu’s innovative structures, including a digital museum, digital artworks, and the Experiential Centre. He emphasized that Enugu has played a significant role in Nigeria’s economic, social, and administrative landscape. Mbah concluded by congratulating the Church on the impressive milestones achieved by the Bigard Memorial Seminary.
