There were allegations that Paqueta attempted to receive a card from the referee intentionally to influence the betting market; the Hammers midfielder responded, “From the start, I have maintained my innocence.”
Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of any spot-fixing accusations after an investigation by the FA, as confirmed by West Ham.
The FA wanted to impose a lifetime ban on the midfielder, and an independent regulatory commission reviewed his case.
Paqueta, who has been under investigation since August 2023, was accused of breaking betting rules in May 2024, with the hearing starting in March of this year.
“I have always claimed my innocence against these serious accusations,” Paqueta said. “I can’t share more details right now, but I want to sincerely thank God and express my excitement to get back on the field with joy.
“To my wife, who has stood by me through it all, to West Ham United, to the fans who have always supported me, and to my family, friends, and legal team who have been there for me—thank you for everything.”
The Brazilian international, who denied the allegations, was accused of being involved in spot-fixing in four Premier League matches—against Leicester City in November 2022, Aston Villa in March 2023, Leeds United in May 2023, and Bournemouth last August.
West Ham released a statement showing their strong support for Lucas throughout this long and tough process.
Vice-chair Karren Brady said: “We are so happy that Lucas has been cleared. He has maintained his innocence from the very beginning, and as a club, we have always supported him during this hard time.
“Even with the huge pressure he faced, Lucas has consistently delivered amazing performances for the club, always giving his best.
“This has been a tough time for Lucas and his family, but he has shown incredible professionalism, and he is now looking forward to moving past this chapter, just like everyone at West Ham.
Paqueta may still face sanction
The FA has revealed that two charges against Paqueta, related to his unwillingness to cooperate with the investigation—which he has denied—have been confirmed.
The FA has stated that a commission will look into what punishment is suitable for these verified violations “as soon as possible.”

“Lucas has faced a lot of pressure with amazing strength and resilience.

“Now, he can finally focus on what matters to him—playing football and cherishing special moments with his family.”
The FA said that it is awaiting a written explanation from the independent panel for its decision on the charges and will not comment further until that time.
