Graham Potter was named the next manager of West Ham United on Thursday, the team announced.
He takes over for Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui, who was fired after just seven months due to his team’s persistently bad performance.
The Englishman has a contract with the London club that expires in 2027. On Friday, he will be in charge of West Ham’s match with Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round.
Although Potter has been connected to a number of positions recently, he has not managed any club ever since he was sacked as Chelsea’s manager in April 2023 after just seven months at the West London club.

He joined Chelsea after three great years at Brighton.
“I’m really excited; it’s a very proud day to be the head coach of this incredible club with a rich tradition, a long history, high expectations, and a daunting assignment. “I’m excited, it’s like Christmas for adults,” Potter said during a press conference on Thursday.
“I didn’t get the best night’s sleep last night due to the excitement. I’m excited to meet the players, supporters, and get started.

People who support the team are proud of them and enjoy watching them play. “Everyone is on the same page with what we want to achieve and how to play football. If that alignment is there and there’s that connection between club and fans, then why put a ceiling on anything?” Potter was asked about his time away from management and why he thought West Ham was the right place for him. He said, “When you’ve had a lot of time to think: there’s a feeling in you, a combination of many factors.”

“The board’s vision, their trust, and belief in me, looking at the playing squad, the academy, the work that Mark Noble performs behind the scenes there. The supporters are passionate, knowledgeable, loyal. “The whole size of the club is massive. It’s a family club, which appeals to me as well because we struggle together.”
After winning six of their first 20 games this season, West Ham is currently ranked 14th in the Premier League.

Potter will be joined by assistant coaches Bruno, Billy Reid, and Narcís Pèlach, who previously worked with him at Chelsea and Brighton. Goalkeeper coach Xavi Valero will retain his role.
