.Calls for youth participation in politics
At the third convocation ceremony of Precious Cornerstone University in Ibadan, Oyo State Governor ‘Seyi Makinde delivered a compelling address on the critical need for ethical leadership and active youth participation in politics. With the backdrop of an auditorium filled with eager graduates, the governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the people’s welfare, highlighting the importance of transparency and community engagement in governance.
In his lecture titled “Faith, Leadership and Governance: Preparing the Next Generation for Ethical Leadership in Nigeria,” Governor Makinde urged the younger generation to step into political roles, insisting that the political space should not be dominated by those lacking integrity. He painted a vivid picture of the current state of governance, warning that if responsible individuals shy away from politics, the vacuum will inevitably be filled by those with unethical motives.
Makinde shared insights on his administration’s achievements, noting a significant improvement in budget performance since he took office. With a focus on fostering accountability and building trust with the populace, he encouraged the graduating students to emulate exemplary leaders and to remain humble and receptive to feedback.
Citing a concrete example from the COVID-19 pandemic, the governor illustrated how ethical decision-making can steer society through challenging times. He called upon the graduates to take inspiration from good leadership practices and to recognize their potential as catalysts for positive change.
The atmosphere was one of hope and determination, as the governor concluded his remarks by instilling a sense of responsibility in the students—encouraging them to become engaged and impactful leaders who prioritize the needs of their community. The Chancellor of the university, Bishop Francis Wale-Oke, echoed these sentiments, urging graduates to carry forward the legacy of ethical leadership in their future endeavors.
Through his passionate address, Governor Makinde not only highlighted the pressing need for change in Nigerian politics but also inspired a new generation to take the reins and steer the country towards a more ethical and prosperous future.
