The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the its National Secretary, bringing a truce to the protracted leadership tussle that has rocked the party.
Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, disclosed this during a press conference on Wednesday.

Party chieftains including chairman of PDP Governors Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and other key stakeholders also attended the briefing.

Damagum said that the decision to reinstate Anyanwu into the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) was not an easy one but reflected the majority will of the party’s leadership organs and stakeholders.
He said: “It was a critical decision, but one that had to be made for the unity and stability of our party’.
He also announced the cancellation of the much-anticipated National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which had been slated to address the party’s internal wranglings.
“We will no longer hold the NEC meeting as earlier planned. Instead, we will convene an expanded Caucus meeting on June 30th. At that meeting, decisions will be taken that will lead to a properly constituted NEC session”, he stated.

Damagum echoed the position of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which had earlier distanced itself from the party’s internal dispute, saying, “Like INEC said, they don’t have our notice. So what we will have on June 30th is an extended Caucus.”

The decision to reinstate Anyanwu follows weeks of confusion within the PDP over the rightful occupant of the National Secretary position — a dispute that has seen conflicting letters sent to INEC and open divisions among party factions.

For now, the move to reinstate Anyanwu signals an attempt by the PDP leadership to restore order within Nigeria’s main opposition party.
