Just three weeks following the heartbreaking murder of two undergraduates from Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba-Akoko, which is under the ownership of Ondo state, another student from the same institution has reportedly been brutally killed by her boyfriend.
The recent murder of Joy Adeyemi, a student in the Department of Human Kinetics, has ignited protests among students in Akungba, the university community. It is important to recall that two undergraduates from the university, Andrel Okah from the Department of History and International Studies and John Abba from the Department of Economics, were previously abducted and murdered.
Police detectives later apprehended the suspected murderers; however, the primary suspect, who was John Abba’s landlord, mysteriously passed away while in police custody.
In the most recent incident, the young woman was killed on Tuesday by her boyfriend, who then fled the area.
According to sources, “The alleged murderer is reported to be a local resident of the town.
The deceased was killed by her boyfriend on Tuesday and was confined inside his room. Neighbors raised the alarm to alert the students when they noticed a foul odor emanating from the room.
We are still in the dark about the motive behind the murder. The lady operated a POS business in the area, but since Tuesday, she had been missing, and no one knew her whereabouts until yesterday, when the neighbors began to detect a terrible smell from her room.
After committing the murder, the boy fled with the money she had for her POS business.
The state government needs to do something about the murders of our students by people in this town.
If they don’t resolve this menace, it could turn into a big problem for everyone here.
Just a few weeks back, two of our students were abducted and murdered, so they must take the right steps to stop this from happening again in the future.
During a recent protest, students expressed their solidarity by singing various songs and holding placards with messages such as, “At Akungba Akoko, say no to the killing of students,” “Stop killing us, AAUA students,” and “The state government must intervene in the killings of AAUA students.”
This demonstration was in response to the recent murder within the university community. The National Association of Nigerian Students Joint Campus Committee condemned the heinous act and urged security agencies to take action to ensure that the perpetrator is held accountable.
Students Issue ultimatum
In a statement from the Chairman and Secretary of the committee, Comrade Adekanye Adeboye and Oladele Emmanuel, the recent murders at the university were described as completely shocking.
The statement reads, “The National Association of Nigerian Students, Joint Campus Council, Ondo Axis, is very worried and deeply saddened by the recent rise in killings aimed at students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State.
“As the student body tries to deal with the heartbreaking loss of two students who were brutally killed at the university, another female student sadly became a victim of this pointless violence that just happened weeks after the tragic death of two students.
“As an organization that looks after the general affairs and welfare of all Nigerian students, we strongly condemn these terrible acts and urge the Ondo State Government and all security forces responsible for protecting lives and property in the state to take immediate action.
“The ongoing violence shows a clear failure in security that needs to be urgently fixed.
“In response to these tragic events, NANS has issued an ultimatum to the Ondo State Government and all relevant security agencies to find and arrest those responsible for these crimes, put strict security measures in place to stop further attacks on students, and ensure the safety and security of all students at the university and nearby areas.”
They stated the need for accountability and decisive actions to safeguard the lives of their members. saying failure to comply within the next 24 hours, they will have to bring together all student groups from across the country to Ondo State and organize a large peaceful protest until their requests are met. The representative of the state police command, Ayanlade Olayinka, has confirmed the murder.
Ayanlade said that the boyfriend of the victim has fled the area and will soon be apprehended by police detectives who are on his trail.
He further mentioned that three individuals have been arrested and are presently being questioned about the murder that took place at the university.
