A student at Bowen University sadly died under unknown circumstances, leading to an inquiry into what transpired during his last hours on campus. The sudden passing of a student from the College of Management and Social Sciences, whose name has not been revealed, was verified by Bowen University’s Registrar, B.T. Adetona, in a sorrowful statement to the campus community.

The Incident occurred on Wednesday night, about 8:20 p.m., when the student was found collapsed near the university’s staff quarters. Authorities are presently putting together the details of his death, as the reasons remain unknown. According to the complaint, the student was spotted racing toward the staff quarters before collapsing and hitting his head on the pavement. A closer look revealed that he had suffered an abdominal injury before falling. Though the area was observed by security agents, there were no signs of a struggle or altercation at the time of the occurrence.

The Director of Health Services and other university medical personnel rushed to the scene and took the student to the university hospital. Sadly, the student died late that night despite the efforts of the nurses and doctors. Upon closer inspection, more bruises was seen around his neck, which may indicate defensive wounds or evidence of a struggle.

Around 8:01 p.m. on Wednesday, the student had texted a friend before he passed away to let her know that he had not yet arrived at his hostel. She had requested him to let her know when he got there, but no more messages came in. Along the path between the power substation and the staff quarters, his personal belonging such as his phone, shoes, cap, and power bank—were discovered strewn around, suggesting a potential struggle or hasty escape. The chronology of events has been pieced together by questioning those who last saw him.

The university management has verified that they have contacted the student’s family and are cooperating with police enforcement to investigate the incident. The institution has also informed its Visitor and Pro-Chancellor about the event, and an investigation is currently underway. In light of the tragedy, the university suspended ongoing exams to give the community time to grieve and reflect. Exams are set to begin on Monday, January 27, 2025. The school also advises students and staff to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the Directorate of Security Services.
