FRSC confirms 20 dead in multiple crash on Plateau route

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 20 people died in a serious crash involving multiple vehicles on the Hawan Kibo-Jos road in Plateau.

The Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Osondu Ohaeri, announced this sad news in a statement released on Friday in Abuja.

Ohaeri said the crash happened at about 3:32 p.m. after Sopp Water Falls. Brake failure and loss of control were likely causes.

He said 25 people were in the crash: 23 men and 2 women.

According to his report, 5 people were hurt—3 men and 2 women—while 20 men died.

“Four vehicles were in the crash. One was a Howo Sino truck with registration number AGL 525 YN.

“The other vehicles were a Toyota Corolla with registration number AB 129 M and a Toyota Bummer bus run by Yankari Express.

“The fourth vehicle was a motorcycle. Its registration details were not available.

“The injured people were taken to Ryom General Hospital and Vom Christian Hospital. The dead were taken to JUTH Mortuary.

“FRSC rescue workers cleared the road and reopened it to traffic,” he said.

FRSC Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed expressed deep sadness about the loss of lives.

He sent his condolences to the families and friends of those who died and prayed for their peace.

Mohammed also wished the injured victims a speedy recovery. He also told the crash investigation team to do a thorough and careful examination.

He said the investigation needed to find out what caused the accident. They had to pay special attention to the brake problem that was reported and how the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The Corps Marshal asked drivers, especially those driving commercial and heavy trucks, to make vehicle safety, regular maintenance, safe speeds, and careful driving their main focus.

Mohammed also warned drivers to be extra careful on the roads. He pointed out that 20 people dying in one accident was more than just a number.

“When 20 people die in one crash, that means 20 families are suddenly filled with sadness. Every number represents a real person, a home, a family, and all the things that person could have done,” he said.

Mohammed told all drivers to take personal responsibility for safety. He stressed that no place you’re going to is worth losing someone’s life. (NAN)
