Gunmen kill Catholic priest in Enugu

Gunmen have tragically murdered Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya, who was the parish priest at St. Charles Catholic Church in Eha-Ndiagu, located in the Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State. This tragic incident happened on Friday evening while the priest was heading back to the parish on the Eha-Ndiagu road.

Reports say that the attackers, riding a motorcycle, planned their attack by blocking Fr. Eya’s car. They started shooting right away, which caused his immediate death. An unnamed source shared that the attackers had purposely let the air out of the priest’s tires, making it impossible for him to drive away before they came up and shot him several times from close range.

“He was coming back from a meeting in Enugu when the gunmen surprised him near the construction site of a Type C hospital,” the source explained. “They fired at his car to stop it and then went ahead with their attack.

It was stated that another occupant in the vehicle escaped unharmed, while the gunmen fled the scene swiftly after committing the act.

Fr. Eya was a well-respected person in the community. He comes from Ugbaike in Enugu Ezike, which is in the Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State. Recently, the governor of Enugu State announced a reward of 10 million for anyone who can provide information that can help in capturing those responsible for his death.
