The respected ex-President of Uruguay, José Mujica, who was a revolutionary guerrilla and flower farmer, has sadly passed away at the age of 89. His distinctive take on democracy, straightforward beliefs, and simple way of living won the hearts of many around the world. Current Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi confirmed the news and paid tribute to Mujica on social media, calling him a ‘president, activist, guide, and leader.’

Mujica had been fighting esophageal cancer since it was diagnosed in 2024. Despite the challenging side effects of his treatment, he made a remarkable comeback to politics, championing his leftist coalition, which successfully led to the election of his preferred successor, Orsi, as president. In September 2024, his doctor announced substantial advancements in shrinking the tumor through radiation therapy.

By January 2025, it was found out that the cancer had come back and spread to his liver. Dealing with an autoimmune disease and other health issues, Mujica decided not to continue with treatment. ‘Honestly, I’m dying,’ he said during what he called his last interview. ‘A warrior deserves to rest.’ While he was president from 2010 to 2015, Mujica, who was lovingly called ‘Pepe,’ guided his small South American nation to become one of the most advanced democracies globally.
