The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has raised the alarm over a fresh resurgence of kidnapping incidents across the state.
The Speaker, Dr Danladi Jatau, raised the alarm on a Matter of Public Interest brought by Mr Solomon Akwashiki during proceedings in Lafia on Monday.
Jatau said the state capital, Lafia, and some other parts of the state were experiencing frequent abductions that had caused fear and economic setback.
He appreciated the mover of the motion and other colleagues for their contributions on the issue.
“The resolution of the House is to urge Gov. Abdullahi Sule, to direct all security agencies, the Commissioner of Police, DSS, and NSCDC to beam their searchlight across the state to curtail the rate of kidnapping.
“All hands must be on deck, especially chiefs and village heads in collaboration with vigilantes to identify strange persons, and people should be security conscious in their communities,” he said.
The speaker directed the Clerk of the house to communicate the resolution to Gov. Sule for necessary action.
Earlier, Mr Solomon Akwashiki, member representing Lafia Central Constituency, who raised the issue, urged security agencies and the state government to be more committed to protecting the lives and property of citizens.
“Mr speaker and my honourable colleagues, I rise on a matter of frequent kidnapping in my constituency.
“Yesterday, in Agyaragu, Lafia, two people were kidnapped; a few days ago, in Agunji, Lafia, people were kidnapped.
“As I speak, the two people kidnapped yesterday are still in the hands of the kidnappers and they are demanding ransom.
“Security agencies and the state government should rise up to curtail the rate of kidnapping and other forms of insecurity in my constituency,” he said.
Akwashiki said the people of his constituency could no longer sleep with their two eyes closed due to frequent abductions.
Also contributing, Mr Esson Mairiga, Mr Onarigu Kana, Mr Abdullahi Sa’ad, Mr Suleiman Azara, Mr Abel Bala and Mr Larry Ven-Bawa supported the motion and called on the state government to beef up security across the state to curtail kidnapping.
They lamented how kidnapping was negatively affecting the lives of their people.
The lawmakers, however, appreciated the efforts of Gov. Sule in terms of security but urged him and the security agencies to be more committed to tackling kidnapping across the state.
