Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has received the Christian Icon Award from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at the association’s 50th anniversary celebration in Abuja.
The governor received the award on Saturday at the National Christian Centre, Central Business District, as part of activities marking CAN’s Golden Jubilee.
CAN President, Most Rev. (Dr.) Daniel C. Okoh, and the co-chairmen of the anniversary planning committee, Boss Mustapha, CFR, and Archbishop Michael Akinwale, said the award recognised Okpebholo’s commitment to compassionate public service, ethical leadership and Christian values in governance.
They said the governor’s contributions to public service and his impact on the Christian community in Nigeria continued to inspire people across the country.
The organisers added that the award recognises leaders who demonstrate excellence, integrity and commitment to nation-building while upholding the values of faith and service in their political responsibilities.
Reacting to the recognition, Okpebholo said it would encourage him to do more for the people of Edo State and Nigeria.
“I am humbled by this recognition from CAN. It is a reminder that leadership is service, and it pushes me to do more for the people of Edo State and for Nigeria,” the governor said.
Okpebholo, who assumed office on November 12, 2024, has anchored his administration on the SHINE Agenda, which focuses on security, healthcare, infrastructure, natural resources, agriculture, and education.
Founded in 1976, CAN is the umbrella body of Christian denominations in Nigeria.
The association is marking its 50th anniversary with activities highlighting its contributions to the Christian community and national development according to a statement signed by Dr. Ebojele Akhere Patrick the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo
