Pope Francis had a peaceful night with no new health issues after experiencing a bronchial crisis that worsened his condition, according to a brief update from the Vatican on Saturday morning.

The pope woke up, had tea and read the newspapers, and he is still able to move and sit in his armchair. However, the Vatican noted that he is not out of danger, and his prognosis remains cautious. On Friday, the pope faced a “sudden worsening of the respiratory picture” due to an “isolated crisis of bronchospasm,” where the airway muscles tightened.

This incident caused the 88-year-old pope to inhale vomit, but he responded well to noninvasive mechanical ventilation, as stated by the Vatican. “The Holy Father has always remained alert and cooperative during treatment,” the Vatican reported. “Thus, the prognosis still remains reserved.” This is the fourth time the pope has been hospitalized since he became the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in 2013.

He had major abdominal surgery in 2021 and another procedure in 2023 to fix scar tissue and an abdominal hernia. Earlier this year, he was briefly hospitalized for pneumonia treatment. Meanwhile, supporters have been gathering outside Rome’s Gemelli hospital, leaving messages and notes near a statue of former Pope John Paul II. Prayers have been offered from around the globe.

Maria Ratai, a woman praying for the Pope in St. Peter’s Square, expressed, “I pray for him every night, asking for his health. We need him, not just us Italians, but the whole world needs him because he stands for peace, and peace is what the world needs.”

Rev. Jacinto Bento, a priest visiting Assisi with 30 Jubilee pilgrims from the Azores Islands, shared, “We pray for the Pope every day. His situation makes us very sad.”
