Another powerful figure in Northern Nigerian politics, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, who served as Chief Security Officer to former Head of State General Sani Abacha, has joined forces with Nasir El-Rufai in the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
As the 2027 presidential election approaches, this alliance further solidifies the momentum within the SDP. Al-Mustapha, a retired Nigerian Army officer and intelligence specialist, held his position as Abacha’s Chief Security Officer from 1993 until the General’s passing in 1998. His entry into the SDP represents a pivotal change in the political arena, as many influential Northern politicians seek new opportunities to assert their influence leading up to the election. This development contributes to the rising “El-Rufai wave,” which has attracted numerous notable politicians to the SDP, drawn by El-Rufai’s vision and leadership.
Al-Mustapha’s involvement is poised to reshape political dynamics in Northern Nigeria, leveraging his extensive network and experience to make a significant impact. His defection is part of a broader trend of political realignment as many are searching for platforms that promise a more substantial role in shaping the nation’s future. With the SDP gaining momentum, Al-Mustapha’s presence is anticipated to enhance the party’s standing in the North, which will be vital for garnering essential support in the race for presidency.
