First black Republican congresswoman Mia Love dies at 49

Mia Love, the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, has passed away at the age of 49 after a courageous fight against cancer. Her family announced the heartbreaking news on social media: With hearts full of gratitude for the significant impact Mia had on our lives, we want to share that she passed away peacefully after battling with cancer, she was surrounded by her loved ones. As we celebrate her life and cherish countless joyful memories,

Mia gently released her hold on this world and, true to her spirit and vision, ascended to the heavens. We appreciate the outpouring of good wishes, prayers, and condolences. As a family, we will take some time to grieve and will share details about funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the coming days.

Love previously held the position of mayor in Saratoga Springs, Utah, before serving as the representative for Utah’s 4th district in the U.S. House from 2015 to 2019. She was a staunch advocate for pro-life policies, actively supporting legislation aimed at safeguarding unborn children from abortion and advocating for the defunding of Planned Parenthood.

Also she participated in the 2017 March for Life. On her initial campaign website, which is now archived, she expressed her strong commitment to the pro-life cause: I take pride in identifying as pro-life. My dedication to pro-life initiatives remains steadfast, and I am eager to collaborate with my colleagues in Congress to uphold the right to life.

I have garnered endorsements from several pro-life organizations, including the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the oldest and largest pro-life organization in the country. In 2022, Love was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer, and was given a prognosis of less than two years to live. Following surgery that successfully removed most of the tumor, she joined an immunotherapy clinical trial in 2023. However, earlier this month, her daughter revealed that the treatments were ineffective, and they shifted their focus to palliative care to ensure her remaining days were as serene and comfortable as possible. She passed away on March 23, 2025.

Lila Rose, the founder and president of Live Action, expressed her condolences on X regarding Love’s passing, stating, “Mia was a shining light in the political arena and a fervent pro-life supporter. She was also a woman of deep faith. May she rest in peace,

Mia.” In her last message written shortly before her death, Love acknowledged the inevitability of her passing and spoke about her aspirations for the future of the United States. “Ultimately, I hope my life has had significance and has contributed positively to the nation I cherish and to my beloved family and friends. I wish for you to witness the America I envision in the coming years, to hear my words carried in the gentle breeze of freedom, and to sense my spirit in the flame of the enduring values of liberty,” she wrote.

My heartfelt desire and sincere hope for you and this country is that the America I cherish is the one you strive to protect. I wish for every citizen and leader to contribute to ensuring that the America we know today will be the legacy passed down to our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Love was the daughter of Haitian immigrants. She is survived by her husband, Jason, and their three children.
