Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has officially adjourned the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), “sine die,” meaning that the proceedings will be suspended indefinitely. The trial faced an unexpected halt following Nyako’s recusal order issued on September 24, 2024. This decision came after Kanu expressed concerns regarding the judge’s impartiality and requested that she step down from overseeing his case. Kanu’s lack of confidence in Justice Nyako’s ability to conduct a fair trial played a pivotal role in her decision to recuse herself, raising significant questions about the future trajectory of this high-profile case.
Justice Nyako returned Nnamdi Kanu’s case file to Chief Judge John Tsoho of the Federal High Court. Justice Nyako Tsoho return the file to Nyako to continue the trial. Kanu stands accused of terrorism by the Federal Government.
The IPOB leader has been in detention since he was rearrested in Kenya and subjected to extraordinary rendition back to Nigeria in 2021.
